Primary Insurance

What Does Primary Insurance Mean?

Primary insurance is an initial and main coverage that is responsible for providing financial protection and paying claims for losses or liabilities. The primary coverage sets the terms and conditions of it, including the limits, deductibles, and exclusions.

The policyholder initiates a demand with their primary insurer. After evaluation, approved petitions are compensated within policy limits. If the loss exceeds coverage, excess insurance may provide additional compensation, if applicable. It is commonly associated with personal protections, such as auto, homeowners, or health insurance, but it can also apply to commercial insurance policies for businesses.

It’s important to keep in mind that multiple coverages can coexist covering the same risk. This should be clarified in the other insurance clause of the primary policy.

When you select the option for a second insurance plan, please note that it operates on the principle of non-duplication of benefits. This means that the second policy will only pay the portion that the first one did not cover.

How Does Primary Insurance Work at PSIC?

Primary insurance at PSIC is our standard coverage that applies to personal products such as Homeowners and provides basic protection.

However, the needs of every policyholder are unique. That’s why we offer additional options that allow you to customize your insurance to your specific requirements. These add-ons provide an extra layer of safeguard and give you flexibility.

Remember that you can expand your liability coverage with a Personal Umbrella, beyond any additions you may make to your primary insurance. For example, if you want to enhance your dwelling coverage, we can increase the level of protection for your main building, detached structures, or both. This ensures that you have adequate coverage in case you need to repair or rebuild them.

In each policy, you will see in detail how a second insurance works. It is important that you are aware of it or seek advice from your agent to understand your rights and obligations.
